Ron Santo

Dec. 3rd, 2010 | 08:18 pm

I've been trying to understand why I feel so emotional over the death last night of Ron Santo, former Cubs player. It's not as tho I had ever met him, we weren't friends, but I see him as a touchstone in my life. Watching him play in the late 60's , hearing him call games in the booth since the 90's , seeing more of his story, including hearing about his diabetes and how he lived a full life despite it, have given me the impression of knowing him better than some people I see everyday.

His attitude, his appreciation for the people around him, the way he expressed his feelings about every Cubs win and loss, endeared him to so many Cubs fans. And to see him let down by the Hall of Fame, after that career. To know that his peers wouldn't acknowledge how he played to 9 All Star games, 5 Gold Glove awards, a lifetime batting average of .277 while playing with diabetes at a time when glucose meters didn't exist, and he had to simply know his own reactions well enough to judge what he needed to get through a 9 inning game. It hurts that he didn't get in to Cooperstown in his lifetime, and I'm sure he will get voted in now, but it doesn't do anything for him. The family could say "screw it" and not accept, but it won't hurt Cooperstown not to have him in, few people would notice. He deserves to be there, and while it hurts that it's late, he should be there. Isn't that why we do what we do? We all do our jobs to the best of our ability because we know it matters. For the greater good, even sports contributes. Ron brought joy to fans and teammates alike. Like Walter Payton, he played a game as well as he could, and inspired many.
I will miss him.
Goodbye old friend

And Parties!!

Took a weekend trip to Chicago with BzdChris, Barley52, FullyGoldy, and T & S. Planned for a great encased meal at Hot Doug's, but when we arrived they were "closed duew to technical difficulties" Bummer. Found a way around and got some great Mexican food for lunch, did some shopping at Uncle Fun's, and headed to the hotel. While Barley52 regained some energy, T & S, BzdChris and I went to The Publican for an incredible meal of tasting plates, 9 between the 4 of us, and probably 2 too many. But all of it was really great.
(OK, I wasn't a fan of the sweetbreads, but I had to try them because I had heard so many other people talk of them. I'm sure they were cooked to perfection, I just didn't like them.)

After a trip out to Fitzgeralds in Berwyn for an Iguana's set, we headed back for a night of sleep.

Sunday was all about going to the Cubs game at Wrigley Field. A quick trip out to Mac's Diner for breakfast, and we got packed up and checked out. Park the cars at the CTA station there in Rosemont, then downtown. Apparently, it was not all about seeing the Cubs play at Wrigley. BzdChris had an agenda. After finding our seats, she disappeared for a few minutes, and when she returned, she was wearing a flowered headband and a veil. Our friend T is an ordained minister, and Chris had conspired with everyone else involved to hold a ceremony there in the stands before the game. No legalities were enforced, no license applied for, just a heartfelt little pledge to each other in a place and time that meant very much to me. It is what I will consider our anniversary, that she thought enough to make this happen with close friends and at Wrigley. So, no matter that the game was rained out. No matter that we left by 330pm, headed out to Goose Island for beer and food, then took the CTA back to our cars just as the game was officially postponed. We got married. And just that quickly I once again realized just how lucky I am.

So this am, on vacation we celebrated and consumated. Tomorrow BzdChris goes back to work, and I have the rest of the week off to work on the house. Life continues to amaze.

Using a heat gun to burn a mosquito to a crisp is amusing, but not quite enough to justify the loss of hair and the burn on my leg...

That is all....

We are back on the Interwebs.... No thanks to AT&T, other than the fine people who work there and screwed up most of the orders we asked for in the last two weeks.

You may now return to your regular broadcasting

From the Depths....emerges a familiar face

HI everybody! I'm not Dr. Nick. I'm the Busman, and I have tales to tell.

So, we jumped in, with help from Bzdchris' Mom and bought a house! It's great ,a three bedroom split level, north side of Madison. We closed early this month, and have been moving stuff over slowly, and doing some cleaning and painting. It's really a crazy time, as we go through stuff, decide whether we are keeping it, look around and figure out that for everything we can get rid of, there are two or three things we need to buy.

Get rid of some old files and magazines, get a new mattress and boxspring. Throw away some beat up camping gear, get a new stove. Receive some stuff from Chris' mom, ( freezer, table and chairs) , buy $200 worth of paint and home improvement stuff at the Depot.

We got blessed by a number of our friends this past weekend, as a painting and cleaning party assembled, painted three rooms, washed out cabinets, moved stuff around and even shared in the life we live.              barley52 ,fullygoldy ,choisyleroi ,drstarbuck ,mc_beth , ashade among LJ Users,  along with Vicki, Matt, Gary and Ray, all showed up and put in a yeoman's day, working until almost 8pm.    The Pizza and Rhubarb Martini spritzers were enough to keep everyone going , ( the occasional beer helped too).    We ended the day sitting on the deck,  laughing and  talking in  the setting sun.  I hear several people were a little sore the next day,  but everyone we spoke to were glad to participate.

I have been  using my (current) Tuesdays off to meet craftspeople  while they do work around the house. Last week appliances were delivered, as well as the new bed, and  I met with a handyman who moved  several light fixtures around, and an MGE guy who prepped the gas line for the new stove.  This week I was supposed to meet a plumber who was going to install a new water softener, as well as a reverse osmosis drinking water system , and the handyman was returning to install the microwave/vent over the stove.   But mu plans fell apart.  The plumber hadn't arrived by 9:30, so I called, and when he called me back he apologised. He had scheduled me for tomorrow,  even tho his notes said Tuesday.  And since I can't be there tomorrow,  he will be over next Tuesday.  Then the handyman called, the job he had started the day before had run into problems, and he wouldn' t  make it either.    I was there trying to do little things while waiting for them, and now it was just me.  Hmmm.

I got the bedframe set up, attached to the headboard,  painted the wall in the basement with Drylock,  and was touching up the walls in the bathroom especially around the ceiling where paint had peeled off when the tape was removed.   As long as I was at it, I tried removing the towel rods, and while taking one off the wall, I hit the bracket it was mounted on with my hand.   So,  11 days, 22  hours,  31 minutes after becoming a mortgage holder ( I won't own a house for a while yet, until  we have paid more than 25% of the mortgage IMHO) , I had my first trip to Urgent Care.    It's not much , three stitches on the side of my hand under the pinkie finger, but down by the wrist.  SO of course the bandage makes it look as though I've already tried to slit my wrist.   I guess the measure of how I'm living my life is how many bruises and cuts I have.  I must be living large.

This weekend the movers come for the big stuff.   Fridge, TV, dressers, bed, pantry and more.  We have to turn the fridge off Wed night, as  it must be clean and warm for the movers,  and so Thurs thru Sat we will be eating at the new place,  or eating out of to go boxes. Matt and Richie will be here to help us move a few more things,  ( I can still work, but lifting heavy stuff is off my hands until next week sometime.)  SO , I guess that's my first real update in a while.   And it may be the last for awhile, as the internets won't be on at the new place until next Thursday at the earliest,  and who knows when if AT&T does it's stellar job of screwing things up again.

I think we've found it...

We have been looking at houses, with our eye on buying this year, after Chris' divorce.
We aren't in a hurry, we don't have to be outof Jake & Gretchen's at any particular date, the market could open up a lot more places, we have options....

Until today.

Today after seeing a horror story, then a grandma's house, then a basic house, we found a place that rocketed top the top of our list.

A place that made us wonder if we can get our down payment and financing in order so that we could put an offer in on the day after the divorce...

A place so well thought out, so well executed, that even tho the kitchen was kinda small.. Chris didn't mind.

Place for parties

Place for storage

Place with beautiful gardens waiting for spring.

A garage to die for.

A yard to frolic in.

A place to dream.....
